When you’re staying somewhere for weeks rather than a couple of nights, it stops being about ticking off tourist attractions and starts being about finding the places you’ll actually go back to. That’s the difference between a holiday and working away, and it’s exactly what we’ve built our homes around in Epworth and Cheshunt.
In Epworth, start with the Old Rectory — the Grade I birthplace of the Wesley brothers, and a genuinely calm half-hour if you need to step away from a screen for a bit. For food, the White Bear Public House & Restaurant is a solid, no-fuss option for a proper meal, whether that’s a quick dinner on your own after a long day or a table booked for the whole team at the end of a project. If the weather turns, Gainsborough Old Hall is a 25-minute drive and one of the best-preserved medieval halls in the country — a good one to keep in your back pocket for a wet weekend.
Over in Cheshunt, Cedars Park is free to walk into and big enough that it never feels crowded — good for clearing your head before a day of calls, or unwinding properly after one. For an evening out, The Roman Urn on Crossbrook Street has been serving the town since 1840 and still feels like a proper local rather than somewhere aimed at passing trade. And if you just need a change of scenery to get some work done outside the house, the Starbucks at the Brookfield Centre has reliable wifi and enough table space to open a laptop without getting in anyone’s way.
None of this requires much planning. That’s the point — when you’re here for the length of a contract, you want places that fit around your routine, not the other way round.
